Saturday Showcase: the Mirage
Desmond Charne aka the Mirage is an interesting Marvel villain from the 70's. Sure, the costume wasn't the greatest back then, but his costume wasn't the only one that would have you say WTF? back then. I was just going through some old comics, and I came across a Captain America Scourge storyline that featured this forgotten villain and I decided to educate you new comic readers to the man known as Desmond Charne but better known by his alias, the Mirage.
Desmond Charne was a former holography technician who wanted to be a supervillain. He used holograph technology which could make him invisible or create 3-D illusions. He made his criminal debut at Betty Brant and Ned Leeds' wedding, intending to rob them and their guests, but Spider-Man interfered. Alas, his plans were ruined by your friendly, neighborhood, Spider-Man. [Amazing Spider-Man #156]
The next time we see Mirage, he had planned to kidnap the Thing from a hospital, to sell him to the highest bidder. However, Daredevil prevented hiss plans, and defeated him. [Marvel Two-in-One #96] No one said he was a successful criminal. (Right Dr. Jay)
Mirage attended the "Bar With No Name" in Medinah County, Ohio and was massacred along with all the other villains present at the incident by the Scourge of the Underworld, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. He was reported to have survived, as part of a ploy to lure the Scourge into a trap. Dressed as Mirage, Captain America captured Scourge, who was then shot to death by another mysterious assailant. [Captain America #319-320]
During the "Dark Reign" storyline, Mirage was later among the 18 criminals that were murdered by Scourge of the Underworld to be resurrected by Hood using the power of Dormammu as part of a squad assembled to eliminate the Punisher.
Mirage disguises himself and a number of the criminals as the Avengers out to kill the Punisher. The Punisher uncovers the ruse when he knocks out Mirage (disguised as Captain America) and captures him. He interrogates Mirage about the villain's plans, and leaves him with a grenade in his mouth.
He was saved by his crew only to have the Punisher find him once again but it wasn't the Punisher that finished him. He was silenced before Frank could get him to talk. [the Punisher #5-8 (2009), Punisher: In the Blood #2]
The Mirage has returned in many storylines since his "reveal" back in 1976, which is proof you can't keep a bad guy down. They just don't seem to stay dead. It is the world of comics you know, lol.

Saturday Showcase: Nebulon
Greetings everyone. I hope your new year is off to a great start. While I was going through my twitter feed, I was on the Spinner Rack page and I saw a classic Defenders cover featuring the "Villain" Nebulon and I knew right away I had to share his story. So who dares summon Nebulon? Well, I do because I wanted to start my Saturday Showcase of 2023 to start with a BANG!
Nebulon is an Ul'lula'n (a race of six-tentacled, finned, water-breathing extraterrestrials about 10 feet in length). He was one of a number of Ul'lula'ns dispatched to locate and secure worlds with the mineral resources that they had depleted on their own home-world of Ul'ula. He took on a glistening, golden humanoid form in an attempt to blend with Earth's human population. Happening upon the evil Hyperion of the Squadron Sinister who was trapped in space, Nebulon rescued him. Hyperion led the alien back to Earth to let him have it. Nebulon helped Hyperion gather the other Squadron Sinister members to build a laser cannon that would melt the polar ice caps and flood the planet, making it perfectly suitable to the Ul'lula'ns.
Nighthawk, a former member of the Squadron Sinister, had been coerced into helping with this plan. He contacted the Defenders, who traveled to the North Pole and fought the Squadron and Nebulon. During the course of the battle, Nebulon expended so much energy that he lost control of his humanoid form and reverted to his monstrous form; Nighthawk took advantage of the confusion this caused among Nebulon's allies and turned the laser cannon on Nebulon, causing him to seemingly implode. But in reality, he was sent to another dimension.
Nebulon's powers are a result of biospheric energy and his alien physiology. He has superhuman strength, durability, and reflexes. Nebulon had the ability to manipulate energy for a variety of effects, including the creation of spheres, shields, or energy bolts, teleportation across the surface of a planet and between dimensions, and shape-shifting. Nebulon's powers were dependent on the biospheric energy of planets. If he were deprived of contact with a planetary biosphere long enough, his power level would be reduced to that of a normal human being.
Nebulon also possessed a gifted intellect and has extensive knowledge of existential philosophy.

Saturday Showcase: Porcupine (Alexander Gentry)
Sometimes I need help deciding who I will showcase and sometimes my showcases are dropped in my lap. For example, I had no idea who I was going to showcase this week until I saw the latest episode of She-Hulk. It is while watching this episode that I realized I need to showcase the classic Ant-Man villain, the Porcupine. There are 3 known versions of the Porcupine in the Marvel Universe but I am going to showcase the original Porcupine also known as Alexander Gentry.
Alexander Gentry was originally a scientist who worked as a weapons designer for the United States Army. He conceived the idea of designing a battle-suit in imitation of a porcupine: it would be covered with quill-like projections for defense. Moreover, it would be able to shoot its quills, or gases, flames, chemicals, paralysis-inducing pellets, or weapons from quill-like tubes, at an opponent. Gentry spends months working overtime to create his porcupine battle-suit. He is proud of his achievement when the suit was finished, and believes his invention is worth a fortune. Yet Gentry also believes that the government would pay him, one of its employees, virtually nothing for his creation. Angrily, Gentry decides to keep the porcupine battle-suit and to use it to become wealthy through crime. Thus Gentry became the Porcupine, one of the first costumed professional criminals of his generation.
Hank Pym aka Ant-Man, and his partner, Janet van Dyne, the Wasp, soon defeat the Porcupine while he attempted to rob a bank. However, the Porcupine succeeds in escaping. After Pym had also assumed the superhuman powers and identity of Giant-Man, Porcupine returns for revenge. During the resulting battle, the Porcupine consumes what he thinks is a Giant-Man growth medium, but which instead shrinks him to microscopic size. Eventually the capsules wear off, leaving him shaken by his defeat.
His self-confidence still shaken by his failures in battling Giant-Man and the Wasp, the Porcupine eagerly accepts the invitation of Count Nefaria, a powerful figure in the criminal Maggia, to join his group of costumed agents. Among Nefaria's agents are Plantman, the original Eel, the original Unicorn, and the Scarecrow, all of whom the Porcupine would ally himself with in the future as well. The Porcupine and the other costumed agents aid Count Nefaria in his attempt to hold much of Washington D.C. for ransom. However, the X-Men thwart Nefaria and his agents.
Once again, the Porcupine escapes being taken prisoner, and he blames the failure of the blackmail scheme on Nefaria and the other agents. Gentry comes to suspect that in fact, he himself was inadequate for the role of being a "super-villain" battling superhuman opponents.
After his battle and escape from the X-Men, Alexander has had run-ins with Iron Man, Captain America, the Defenders, She-Hulk, and many others throughout his career. He eventually is captured and sent to prison only to escape countless times. He evidentially goes underground, never to be heard from again. Well, maybe not never...lol.

Saturday Showcase: Mr. Immortal
Today's Showcase features the leader of the Great Lakes Avengers, Mr. Immortal. Why did I choose to do my showcase on an Avenger B Team member? Well, you have the Disney+ hit series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to thank for that.
Craig Hollis, aka Mr. Immortal, was created by John Byrne and he first appeared in The West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #46 (July 1989). He was the leader of a group of heroes calling themselves the Great Lakes Avengers. They caught the attention of Mockingbird and Hawkeye from the West Coast Avengers so the couple decided to go check them out. It was during a battled with Mockingbird that we realized that Mr. Immortal was actually immortal.
Craig's origin story was not fully disclosed in his first appearance but the story goes something like this. A cosmic entity known Deathurge first appeared to Craig shortly after his birth and the death of his mother. We find out the mother made Deathurge promise that he would look after Craig. Craig called Deathurge, "D'urge", and the two became the best of friends. His father believed Craig had an imaginary friend. Deathurge would often find ways for Craig to tempt Death so he could be free of his promise.
On Craig's eighth birthday, Deathurge goaded Craig into setting his house on fire, and then hiding under it as it burned. This event wouldkill Craig's father. After the fire, Deathurge stopped visiting Craig and Craig was moved into a new home. His foster father, Mr. O'Doughan, was an abusive man, though Craig became close to his foster sister, Terri, the two eventually falling in love as adults. This ended with Terri's suicide, prompting the return of Deathurge. The grief-stricken Craig begged Deathurge to take him but Deathurge refused and departed again. Craig attempted the first of a number of suicide attempts by jumping off a building, only to discover with this and subsequent attempts using other methods, that he could not die.
With the discovery of his immortality, he takes on the codename Mr. Immortal. In his first outing as a superhero, trying to foil a bank robbery, Mr. Immortal is shot and left for dead. He decides that forming a team will allow him to apply his abilities more usefully. Although he is given to fits of rage upon regaining consciousness following otherwise-fatal injuries, his teammate and sometimes lover Dinah Soar can utter vocalizations that can calm him. On account of his immortality, he often engages in life-endangering stunts, and is invariably willing to take on the deadliest aspects of missions.
The team first encounters the Avengers when they are lured to the Germania Building by Hawkeye and Mockingbird, who become their mentors. They helped Hawkeye and the West Coast Avengers against "That Which Endures." They also assisted Mockingbird in a holding action against Terminus. After aiding the Thunderbolts against the villain Graviton, the team clashes with the mercenary Deadpool.
Deathurge eventually returns and lets Craig know that his destiny was to outlive everyone as the one true immortal, and then learn the grand secret that will reveal itself at the end of things, in addition revealing Mr. Immortal not to be either Homo sapiens or homo superior, but rather Homo supreme: a being that has evolved past death itself, making him the ultimate human. Deathurge thought by taking away some of his loved ones, would prepare Mr. Immortal so that he could truly live to that destiny, but this is jeopardized by the supervillain Maelstrom, who threatens to destroy the entire universe.
This gives Mr. Immortal a new incentive to live, and he sets out to stop Maelstrom and save the universe. The GLA confront Maelstrom, who in the course of the conflict, commits suicide. The GLA, however, gain no recognition and circumstances force them to cease using the Avengers name. After discovering that they were all mutants, the team decides to change their name to the Great Lakes X-Men, and adopt new costumes. Which in turn really wouldn't last that long.

Saturday Showcase: Mockingbird (Sunday Edition)
It has been two weeks since the Hawkeye series ended over at Disney+ and I promised one more showcase inspired by the show. As with most holidays, things tend to surprise and I could not get this out in time for Saturday, so I hope you enjoy my Sunday edition of my Saturday Showcase. Today, we focus on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent 19 aka Bobbi Morse aka Mockingbird.
Barbara Morse first appears in the Ka-Zar story in Astonishing Tales #6 (June 1971) written by Gerry Conway and penciled by Barry Smith. The earliest story to be written and drawn (by Len Wein and Neal Adams) featuring the character was intended to appear in Savage Tales #2 (July 1971), but the series was canceled and new homes were found for the stories in the ensuing months.
After appearing in the 1983 Hawkeye mini-series, Mockingbird became a founding member of the West Coast Avengers, appearing in the group's initial self-titled mini-series, followed by regular appearances in the group's ongoing monthly series, until its end in 1994.
She was written off as dead until the 2009-2010 Secret Invasion storyline that indicated that the real Bobbi Morse was abducted by Skrulls and the Mockingbird that died was a Skrull agent.
Mockingbird then appeared as a regular character throughout the 2010–2013 New Avengers series, from issue #1 (August 2010) through its final issue #34 (January 2013). She also co-starred in the 2010 series Hawkeye & Mockingbird, which ran for 6 issues. Mockingbird became a regular character in the 2013 Secret Avengers series by Nick Spencer and Luke Ross.
- As Dr. Barbara Morse: Astonishing Tales #6 (June 1971)
- Astonishing Tales #12 (June 1972)

Saturday Showcase: the Swordsman (Jacques Duquesne)
Just exactly who is Jacques Duquesne? Well, in the days of old, he was the man who took a young Clint Barton and shaped into the weapon known as Hawkeye. Today's Marvel Fans will know him as Kate Bishop's soon to be step-father in the Disney+ Hawkeye series. So, as I asked before, who is Jacques Duquesne? Well, the answer to that question is quite simple...he is the Swordsman! Let us take a look in the history of such a wonderful character in the Marvel Universe.
Jacques Duquesne grew up as a privileged youth in the French ruked nation of Siancong. As the costumed Swordsman, Duquesne, fancying himself a swashbuckling freedom fighter, helped liberate Siancong, only to learn the rebel leader Wong Chu had killed Duquesne's father. Devastated and disillusioned, Duquesne departed Siancong to seek adventure.
Eventually Duquesne, took a young runaway named Clint Barton under his wing and taught him how to use bladed weapons, while another performer, Trick Shot, taught Barton archery, at which he proved to be a master. The young Clint stumbled upon Duquesne stealing money from the carnival's paymaster to pay a gambling debt. Clint attempted to turn his mentor over to the law, but he was pursued by Duquesne and badly beaten. Before Duquesne could deliver the fatal blow, Trick Shot stepped in to save the young boy. Duquesne then fled the carnival and adopted his swordplay act to become a costumed supervillain.
Years later, the Swordsman attempted to join the Avengers (whose members included Clint Barton, now known as the superhero Hawkeye) in order to take advantage of the benefits that go with an Avenger ID. He was refused entry into the team, largely due to Hawkeye's protests and the fact he was wanted in different states, and threatened to kill Captain America after capturing him, but the rest were able to rescue him. After failing the first time around, he was eventually accepted into the Avengers. However, he was secretly an agent of the Mandarin, who had teleported him to his castle before the Avengers could capture him, and created a pseudo-image of Iron Man to recommend the Swordsman to the Avengers.
The Mandarin also fitted the Swordsman's sword with extra powers, such as firing artificial lightning bolts, though he warned the Swordsman if they were ever pointed at him they would reverse. Soon after joining the Avengers, the Swordsman revealed his true intentions and betrayed the team, planting a bomb on the control panels which could be activated by remote-control. He soon had a change of heart and betrayed the Mandarin to save the Avengers. Despite his heroics, the Swordsman left the ranks of the Avengers, knowing the Mandarin would now be against him.
The Swordsman went back to being a supervillain for hire and battled the Avengers on numerous occasions. Under Black Widow's leadership, the Swordsman teamed with the original Power Man and fought the superhero team, capturing nearly all of its members. With Power Man, he fought against Captain America as agents of the Red Skull. The Swordsman also participated in the Mandarin's attempt at world conquest, along with other villains. He later battled Captain America again, as a member of Batroc's Brigade. Along with Power Man, the Swordsman joined the supervillain group the Lethal Legion and battled the Avengers.
In his last mission, Duquesne aided the Avengers in the conflict that involved Kang's quest for the "Celestial Madonna". In order to facilitate his plans, Kang had captured the Avengers present at the time – Vision, Thor, Iron Man, Mantis, The Scarlet Witch, and their guest Agatha Harkness – but left Swordsman behind because he considered him useless. Humiliated but determined to show Kang his true worth, Swordsman tracked the captive Avengers to Kang's pyramid base in Gizeh, where he encountered Rama-Tut, Kang's chronological alter ego. With his help and the assistance of Hawkeye, who had just returned from a leave of absence, Swordsman managed to free his fellow Avengers. It was later revealed that Mantis was in fact the "Celestial Madonna". After Kang's plans were foiled and he decided not to leave the Madonna to anyone else, the Swordsman sacrificed his life by intercepting Kang's energy blast which was meant for Mantis.
Powers and Abilities
The Swordsman is an Olympic level athlete with no superhuman powers, and is a cunning strategist with phenomenal reflexes and highly adept at unarmed combat. The Swordsman is a master in the uses of bladed weapons, especially swords and knives, and his main weapon is a sword modified by the super-villain Mandarin from Makluan technology. By pressing one of the buttons on the sword's hilt, the Swordsman can project a concussive force beam, a disintegrating ray, a large jet of flame, electrical energy in a form resembling lightning, or a stream of nerve gas that induced temporary unconsciousness. He also carries various throwing knives and daggers as needed.
