Saturday Showcase: Zero (Mutant Liberation Front)

Can't touch this
Not much is known about the character named Zero from the MLF (Mutant Liberation Front).  What we do know is Zero was created 2000 years in the future by the Askani as a prototype for the Ambient-energy Damping Automated peacekeeping Mechanisms (ADAMs). Zero was damaged and found by the mutant tyrant, Stryfe, who opposed the Askani. Stryfe reactivated Zero, leaving it mute and obedient. Zero would become Stryfe's most trusted ally. When Stryfe's armies were defeated, Stryfe and Zero fled, travelling back in time to the late 20th century.

Saved by Zero
It is in the 20th century where Stryfe gathered a group of mutants and formed the terrorist organisation known as the Mutant Liberation Front. Stryfe's new team fought against Cable and the New Mutants and X-Force. During the X-Cutioner's Song, Stryfe was defeated on the Moon and Zero disappeared and was deactivated.  Leaving the secrets of Stryfe unknown to the world...but would those secrets remain hidden?

This wouldn't be the end of Zero.  He would be reactivated later by a group of Mercs (including Deadpool) looking for the ultimate weapon.  This weapon was Zero.  Zero was now capable of speech and following his original programming: peace-keeping. It scanned its surroundings for any object and person who were a threat to peace on Earth and eliminated Slayback. He was about to eliminate Deadpool as well, but Deadpool convinced Zero that he had potential for good. Zero gave Deadpool the benefit and left.

Allies til the End?
Zero went on to try to become more human.   His new goal was to achieve full sentience and become "alive". It sensed the potential to be alive in the techno-organic being known as Douglock and gave it independence from the Phalanx. Zero set out to teach Douglock about his new existence, but Zero was now hunted by killer androids, programmed by Stryfe to destroy Zero in case of his death. Zero and Douglock were assisted by Excalibur and together they tried to deactivate the androids from Stryfe's secret base below the Pentagon. Here, Zero realized that he had become sentient and also the reason why Stryfe wanted him killed: locked within his data banks, Zero had all the secrets of the Legacy Virus, Stryfe's final "gift" to the world. This revelation activated Zero's self-destruct sequence and the killer androids in Stryfe's base.

Shadowcat managed to remove the self-destruction device, but Zero realized that his sentience was a cruel joke and that Stryfe had programmed him to think it was alive. Zero sacrificed itself to protect Excalibur, Douglock, and a family of innocents from the base's self-destruction.   In Zero's last few moments on Earth, Zero transferred all of its memories to Douglock. So while its body is destroyed, the data that made up Zero's mind is still contained within the mind of Douglock.

the MLF

Comic Review: Deadpool the Duck

What do you get when you cross Wade Wilson aka Deadpool, Howard the Duck, and a case of Space Rabies?  You get Deadpool the Duck, that's what. You want comedic writing, well this issue is slam full of it.

The issue starts off with Wade looking over a S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house as his home base of operations when he is given the task to take out a target.  Who is the target, we do not found out before the story shifts to Howard the Duck.

When we are introduced to Howard, he is driving around town questioning why is he here when out of the sky falls an alien pod right on his car, totally destroying his vehicle.  Just who is in the pod, why Guardian of the Galaxy Rocket that's who.  He has been infected by an unknown enemy with a batch of space rabies.  While Howard is fleeing for his life, Wade makes an entrance and tries to take the Raccoon down but to no avail.  Before you know it, Rocket attacks Wade while he is in Howard's presence by biting his arm.  Only problem is, he sinks his teeth into Wade's teleport watch which for some reason causes a dramatic side effect.  Now Wade and Howard are one.  How will this story end?  Who knows but issue #2 hits newsstands on January 18th.

Stuart Moore does Deadpool justice with his writing and the art of Jacopo Camagni adds life to the comics.  I gladly give issue #1 a 10 out of 10 rating and I truly cannot wait until issue #2.

Spider-Man/Deadpool #1 Comic Review

Let me just start this review by saying it is about time that Wade and Peter get a book together.  With that being said let the hilarity begin.

Anyone who has been a true comic fan knows that one of Spidey's gifts was the gift of gab.  Decades pass and all of a sudden we have a new comer wanting the title.  Of course we know the challenger as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool.  So it was only fitting for them to star in a title together.  We know Wade as the Merc with a mouth and he lives up to that title.  Don't believe me?  Just check out the panel above.

Issue #1 finds the team of Spider-Man and Deadpool in the depths of hell about to be tortured by the Mindless Ones.  How did they get there, well you really need to read the issue to understand the flashback.  Eventually they get free and resolve the issue at hand only to make it back to New York to be attacked by a polluted Hydro Man is bent on getting money or destroying the city.

the Mindless Ones aren't so Mindless anymore.

I know that you must be thinking, wait, Derf really hasn't told us much and you would be right.  This book is one that I really feel that you should pick up and enjoy for yourself.  I, myself, had some laugh out loud moments I am proud to say.  My biggest LOL moment was when Deadpool provided the Mindless Ones with brains.

Anyway, I give Spider-Man Deadpool #1 a strong 9 out of 10 rating.  Some people may give it a perfect 10, but there was too much going on in this issue for me to.  I look forward in getting issue #2 to see if Deadpool succeeds in his plan on becoming Spidey's partner.

Until next time, unleash your inner NERD and get your READ on!

In Case You Missed It: Deadpool vs Carnage

Today I am doing a review on the Marvel Mini-Series titled Deadpool Vs. Carnage.  I chose to wait until all the issues were out to do this review, hence the reason it is an In Case You Missed It post. Let's start this post off with looking at the cover image from issue #1.

With a title such as Deadpool Vs. Carnage, you knew it would be full of violence and insanity and it did not fail in that aspect.  The story begins with Carnage escaping his prison and going on a killing spree.  Our hero, the Merc with a mouth, learns about this killing spree while watching TV at home.  Wade then thinks to himself that he may be the only one insane enough to track and stop Carnage.  He asks for a sign and boy does he get one.  He then realizes the only way to track someone who is insane is to let his own insanity guide him.

He finally catches up to Carnage and starts to serve his brand of justice, when he realizes that Carnage has a companion, and she is going to be a problem. Well, no matter, Deadpool can overcome any injuries, even ones to his face.  Once it appears that Wade is finished, Cassidy aka Carnage wants to know how Wade found him.

Of course when Deadpool tells him his insanity led the way, Carnage doesn't believe him. Realizing that Deadpool isn't actually easy to kill, Carnage and Shriek mess him up really good before making there escape.  Well, when Deadpool heals, he eventually catches up to the devious duo and tries to put and end to the madness once and for all.  Easier said than done, I tell you.  There were epic battles and even help from the strangest people along the way, but what won the war for Wade was his insanity.  Carnage couldn't compete with Deadpool's mind, so he locks himself up until he can face the challenge that is Deadpool's mind.

If you are a Deadpool fan, then you will love this series.  Hell, if you are a comic fan period, you will love this series.  I realize it may be hard to get all 4 issues from your comic supplier since issue #1 was released a couple of mots ago, but I recommend trying to h=get your hands on it. Hell, go the digital or eBay route if you have to.  You could always wait for the trade to come out as well.  Either way, you will want to read this book.  I give the series a strong 10 out of 10 and I think you will do the same.
