What You Should Be Reading: G.I. Joe Vs the Six Million Dollar Man

    I just finished reading issue #4 of the G.I. Joe Vs the Six Million Dollar Man mini-series from IDW Publishing/Dynamite Entertainment.  I know the series ended in Mat and I am a little behind with my reading, but this series had me hooked from the beginning.  

    First of all, I remember watching the reruns of the Six Million Dollar Man as a kid.  I was also there, when the G.I. Joe cartoon first hit the airwaves.  So this series, to me, was like reliving part of my childhood. So kuddos to ythe writers for that.

    Secondly, this story was so well written, that it was relevant to today.  Countries at war, organizations trying to have the best weapon, and so forth.  I do not want to give too much away because I want you to read this for yourself.

    Basically, COBRA finds a way to control Col. Steve Austin aka the Six Million Dollar Man.  He turns out to be COBRA's most effective weapon and proves to be a challenge for the Joes.  Battles are fought, lost, and eventually won leaving COBRA to try to conquer the world another day.  

    This series has all the favorites of my youth, Snake-eyes, Storm Shadow, Roadblock, Recondo, Zartan, and even the Cobra BATs.  Ryan Ferrier did an outstanding job on writing this series.  The writing was done so well that I would love to see it as an animated film.  I would buy the Blue Ray in a heartbeat.  The artwork of SL Gallant was spot on.  This is a must read for any fans of the G.I. Joe organization as well as the Six Million Dollar franchise.  Do your self a favor and go to a local comic store and get the 4 issues today.   If you cannot find them, keep your eyes posted for the trade of this series when it hits shelves in early August of 2018.

Star Trek/Green Lantern: Stranger Worlds

The following is a review of the successful crossover between DC Comics and IDW.  The reason I say it was successful is because this is actually the second time they crossed over.  I am talking of course about the Star Trek/Green Lantern cross over event Stranger Worlds.  If you have not read it yet, read on at your own risk...there are spoilers!

We began this journey with the first installment known as the Spectrum War (2015).  All the Lantern Corps were "transported" to another dimension by one of the Guardians.  While trapped in this dimension, they made friends with the Captain Kirk and those friends/foes of the Federation.  The story ended with all the Corps uniting to defeat Nekron and his dead lanterns.

Well, we pick up the story 6 months from their arrival in this weird, yet familiar dimension.  The only problem is, without the power batteries, all of the lanterns rings are running out of power.  So, Hal and the others find themselves trying to adapt to their new surroundings while looking for this dimension's OA as well as the other batteries.

Long story short, they discover a man-hunter which gives Hal hope that they can find OA, or at least this dimensions version of it.  Well, they are not the only ones looking for power.  Atrocitus is looking for a source of rage to fuel his red ring, unfortunately he found it in the likes of a "prison" that housed the one and only Kahn.  I say unfortunately because Atrocitus is no more after his altercation with Kahn.  The other lanterns discover what had occurred, but it was too late.

Fast forward a couple of issues and all the power batteries are found and an all out war breaks out,  The guardians of this dimension help Kirk achieve the power to wear the ring in which he uses it to take on Kahn and Sinestro.  All is won and the lanterns are looking forward to finding their way home.  Hal does however want to show Kirk a section of space that they need to explore.  A system with a RED sun.  Hmmm, could this be the next cross over event?

I only gave a "cliff notes version" of the story because I want you to pick this up for yourself to enjoy.  If you cannot find all 6 issues at a comic book store or eBay, make sure to pick up the trade when it is available.

I have been enjoying the cross over events with DC and IDW.  I hope that they continue.  I give Star Trek/Green Lantern: Stranger Worlds a solid 10 out of 10 stars.  The story was well written as well as drawn and was just a joy to read all together.

Required Reading: Stranger Worlds

In today's world of comics, I find it hard to find something that delivers a new and fresh story.  The team of DC Comics and IDW have found the secret to doing just that.  The Star Trek Green Lantern crossovers have breathed life into old school comic fans like myself as well as drawing attention to get new readers as well.  In the comic industry, I call this a win win.

In case you missed the first crossover known as the Spectrum War, we find a guardian in distress and he can do only one thing to save the rings of the guardians and that is transport them to another realm or dimension.  Well, when this task was done, lanterns from all corps were transported as well. Without time to get familiar with their surroundings, the lanterns were forced into a Spectrum War, that is an all out war of the rings and their new bearers until Nekron and the Black Lanterns get involved.  Then it took, all the lanterns as well as their new found allies to take down Nekron once and for all.

Well, in Stranger Worlds, the lanterns have been stuck in their new home for six months and they are starting to lose the light that gives them power.  Without a battery to recharge their rings, the lanterns are faced with the possibility of never being a lantern again every time they use their rings.  Attempts have been made to duplicate the rings, but Star-fleet's scientists cannot replace the power of the guardians.

All seems lost until they come across something that renews hope in finding a battery in their new home.  The find an old man-hunter droid, you know the original peace keepers from the guardians. If man-hunters exist in this realm, then so do the guardians which means more power for the rings.

I could tell you more, but then I would ruin the story for you.  I gladly give Stranger Worlds a full rating of 10 out of 10 even though it is only on issue #2. The writing is fabulous and the art is just out of this world.  Be sure to get your copies of #1 and #1 of Stranger Worlds today and reserve the following issues so you do not miss a thing.  While your at it, get the Spectrum War trade or complete issues to see the crossover event of 2015.

Comics You Should Be Reading: Street Fighter vs G.I. Joe #1

     If you are anything like me, then you grew up watching G.I. Joe cartoons and losing quarters to the Street Fighter game at the arcade.  That is why I was beyond happy when I found out that IDW was coming out with a Street Fighter vs G.I. Joe comic.

     Issue #1 begins with the introduction of a tournament known as the World Warrior Tournament.  Who thought of such a wonderful tournament?  Why Major Bison and Destro of course.  Why are these great fighters gathered together?  Well, the future will answer that question but we are given some clues from this amazing first issue.

    There are classic fights, the first we witness is a classic battle between Crimson Viper and Snake-Eyes.  Then, we see matches that include baroness and Roadblock.  Who exactly wins these bouts?  Well, I could spoil it for you but I choose not to.  All I can say is that this comic has all the key players that one needs to be satisfied.

    I strongly give issue one a rating of 10 out of 10 stars.   In fact, I was so impressed with the book, that I contacted the writer, Aubrey Sitterson for an interview for that website you know and love, Somewhatnerdy.  He said yes, so be on the look out.  Until next time, get your READ on and Yo Joe!
