Saturday Showcase: Agatha Harkness

Well for those of you watching WandaVision, it appears the cat is out of the bag. If you have not been a Marvel fan since the '70's, you maybe a little lost right now. So, let me explain exactly who Agatha Harkness is with my Saturday Showcase.

Agatha Harkness was first introduced as the governess of Franklin Richards. She easily fended off the Frightful Four when they came to abduct Franklin Richards, and admitted to the Fantastic Four that she is a witch. She then aided the Fantastic Four in battle against Annihilus. (Fantastic Four#109-110)

Through the actions of her son Nicholas Scratch, she was revealed as being a member of the previously unknown New Salem, Colorado, a colony of witches of whom she had been the leader. Scratch had taken control of the town and had persuaded its inhabitants that Agatha had betrayed the community's secrets by working for the Fantastic Four. She was abducted and taken back to the community with Franklin so that she might be put on trial. (F4 #185) The Fantastic Four followed and came into conflict with the Salem's Seven, Agatha's grandchildren that were fathered by Scratch. The Fantastic Four defeated them and freed Agatha. In the process, Scratch's evil was revealed to the community of New Salem and he was banished to another dimension. (F4 #186) Agatha became the magical tutor for the Scarlet Witch in the use of witchcraft. (the Avengers #128)

Scratch and Salem's Seven returned, and Agatha foiled their attempt to conquer the world. (F4 Annual #14) Eventually Salem's Seven took over the New Salem community again. They captured Agatha and killed her by burning her at the stake, though Agatha soon made her presence known to Wanda in what appeared to be a post-death astral form. In an ensuing battle between the Scarlet Witch and Salem's Seven, the entire community's energies were drawn into Vertigo of the Seven, who lost control of them. Wanda managed to capture some of the energy and funnel it away, but the entire town was still decimated. Following hints from Agatha's astral form, Wanda channeled the remaining energy to become pregnant with her husband’s, The Vision, children. (Vision and Scarlet Witch Vol. 2, #3)

Once again, Agatha resurfaced, again alive and well, when Wanda's infant children began exhibiting odd behavior (disappearing for brief periods of time) and Wanda became unstable after her husband's dismantling; Agatha provided no explanation for her return. (Avengers West Coast #51) After Mephisto claimed that Scarlet Witch's children were actually fragments of his own soul and reabsorbs them, Agatha briefly mind-wiped Wanda's memory of her children in an attempt to help her deal with the trauma.

Saturday Showcase: Quicksilver

Original Look

With all the excitement and praise surrounding the Marvel Studios/Disney+ hit series WandaVision, I figured I would showcase the one and only Quicksilver. He has been mentioned in the last few episodes so I figured why not?

Let's start with the basics.

Quicksilver aka Pietro Maximoff is the twin brother of the Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff, the son of Magneto and the half-brother of Polaris. Quicksilver first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #4 (March 1964) and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The character has since starred in two self-titled limited series and has historically been depicted as a regular team member in superhero title the Avengers and the X-Men.

Quicksilver has the superhuman ability to move at great speeds. In most depictions, he is a mutant, a human born with innate superhuman powers. In comic book stories beginning in 2015, he is the product of genetic experimentation by the High Evolutionary. Quicksilver was originally cast as a villain, but made the transition to use his gifts for good as a superhero.

Quicksilver has always been one of my favorite characters good or bad in the Marvel Universe. In fact, I was ticked when they killed him off in the Age of Ultron but I was happy when they introduced him in the X-Men First Class series over at Fox. With Disney+ owning all the rights, I am hoping that while Wanda is playing god, she can somehow bring Quicksilver back to us in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to enjoy for years to come.

Mini-Review starring Uncanny Avengers #1

Greetings my fellow comic fans,

     I am starting my mini-review posts with the title, Uncanny Avengers #1. The only reason I am doing a mini-post for this book is simple, I received my issue two weeks after it was released so everyone and anyone already reviewed it to death since it was one of Marvel's most hyped releases in October.
Now let's get to the actual review.

     Uncanny Avengers #1 is a solid start to a new title from Marvel. This title f course takes place after the Avengers Vs X-men series. Teams are views are starting to change in the Marvel Universe. The book follows several people in the aftermath of Cyclop's betrayal,n story involves Captain America trying to convince Havok to join the Avengers. After their conversation, they come across Avalanche destroying the city. Cap asks Havok for help, which provided a kick ass panel (see above pic), and he does without hesitation.

     After this battle sequence, we find the Scarlet Witch paying her respects at Professor X's memorial and Rogue doesn't like it one bit. They get in an argument but are rudely interrupted by a bunch of the Red Skull's mutant henchman. As one goes for the kill on Rogue, Wanda gets in they way and seems to have perished to their new foes.
Exactly what will happen next? Well, we will have to wait for issue #2 to find out. Be sure to check www.somewhatnerdy.com for my review of issue #2 when it is the shelves. I give this title a perfect 10 out of 10 rating.
