Saturday Showcase: the Trench

the Trench

With all the excitement from Comic Con and all the new trailers, I thought I would use to showcase the Trench monsters from Aquaman.  In past showcases, I have talked about characters that have been around for years, but after watching the trailer, I wanted to talk about the Trench.

Arthur and Mera battle the Trench creatures
For those of you who don't know, the Trench are a long forgotten race of underwater predators that evolved from one of the three surviving kingdoms of Atlantis.  The other two kingdoms being the Xebelians and Atlantians of course.  (From the trailer it appears all 3 kingdoms are represented)  The Trench have loyalty to the Dead King, but they will follow whoever wields the Dead King's scepter.  Orm thought it was powerful and that is what controlled them where as Arthur thought the sight of the scepter made them follow due to tradition and loyalty to the Dead King.

Outnumbered, just the way Arthur likes it.
The Trench first appeared in 2011 during the New 52 days of the DC Universe.  They were created by Geoff Johns & Ivan Reis.  The trench was also used by King Orm in his war with the surface world and Justice League.  Honestly, the Trench story line is what made me realize how much of a bad ass Aquaman really was.  So when I saw the SDCC trailer for Aquaman and saw the Trench monsters in it, I knew I had to write this post and share my approval.  I am excited to see the film, not only to see the Trench but to see how they are used in the film.

In the end, the Trench are some bad ass mofos and I am glad it didn't take years to get the recognition they deserve.  If you haven't seen the trailer yet, please feel free to watch it here and now.

Until next time, unleash your inner NERD!

World's finest: Huntress & Power Girl #0 Comic Review

For my next mini-review,
I am sticking to the Earth 2 theme and reviewing Huntress and Power Girl #0.

This issue was written by Paul Levitz and drawn by Kevin Maguire and Wes Craig.
The story is titled Beginnings and it means just what it says.  Before there was the Huntress, their was Robin, daughter to Batman and Catwoman.  Before their was Power Girl, there was Supergirl, Superman's cousin from Krypton.  They became best buds after Kara stepped in and helped Robin out of a situation.  What was the situation?  You will have to get this issue to see for yourself.
I think the story was written very well and drawn wonderfully to set the mood.
I give this issue a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Earth 2 #0 Comic Review

As some of you may know, I do the comic reviews for the site, www.somewhatnerdy.com.
Well, sometimes I have to choose from a multitude of choices.
SO, I decided to start doing mini-reviews on this site.  A mini-review is for the books I enjoyed and think you will as well.
My major reviews will still go up at somewhatnerdy, so make sure to follow both sites.

For my first mini-review, I choose issue #0 of the Earth 2 series from DC Comics New 52 line-up.
The story is titled a Hero's Tale and it is written by James Robinson and drawn by Tomas Giorello.  The story is told from the perspective of Terry Sloan aka Mr. 8, who is a member of the league of heroes who are trying to stop Darkseid's invasion of Earth 2.  Well, Terry is all about survival of the fittest and he has figured out a way to prolong his life.  How he does this is down right evil.  He turns on the League and and does a dimensional jump as Earth 2 is destroyed.  To be known as a hero or villain is of little consequence to Terry, for his main goal is to make the world a stronger world no matter the cost.

Great Art + Great Writing = a damn good book!  5 out of 5 stars.

2 reasons to read the new 52 Green Lantern

There are 2 reasons you should be reading DC Comics the new 52 issues of Green Lantern.
Both reasons happen to occur in issue # 8 of the series.

1.  Hal Jordan is a bad ass and shows the Black Hand exactly what he can do.
BadAss

2.  This kick ass Tron inspired motorcycle Hal uses to get away from the Indigo tribe.

I love Fridays!

I know most comic readers love Wednesdays, but I love Fridays!  Why?  Because that is when I get an advanced pick at what comes out on Wednesday.  You see, I used to get my comics from a local store known as the School of Comics.  Well, thanks to all the economy crap, my favorite place to read and hang out was shut down.  Well, I found a couple of great dealers online and therefore Fridays are now my favorite comic related day.  Today was even made more special because I got my latest titles in the mail.  In fact when I finish this post, I am going to read them.
What titles did I get you ask?  Well, this week is nothing but a new 52 week from DC Comics.

The titles include:
Aquaman 6

Batmn 6

Dark Knight 6

Corps 6

New Guardians 6

New 52: Aquaman

#1It's been a while since I did a review on the comics I am reading so, I decided to talk about a comic I am really loving right now.  DC Comics the New 52 Aquaman has been a breathe of fresh air.  In the past, I know people gave Aquaman fans a hard time.  Hell, I was one of them (Sorry Old Man Logan).  But I got to say I am enjoying what I am reading as well as seeing.  I am proud to say I am an Aquaman fan.  In fact, maybe that was the whole goal of DC for the new 52.  Why?  You ask.  Because now I want to check out some of the original stories from Aquaman's past just to get a complete look at what makes him so cool.
Coolness

I highly recommend this book to comic lovers everywhere.

So far, I give this title 10 out of 10 stars.

New 52: Detective Comics

Cover #1
I admit, I was anti-new 52 at first.  In fact, I still am in certain areas.  For example costume changes, but I have to admit, out of all the New 52 issues I have read so far, they are pretty solid.  I am upset with the Firestorm title but that is another post in itself.  Let's talk about the issues that I think are hot and worth your time and money.

DollmakerFor my first post about the New 52, I want to share my thoughts about Detective Comics.  What can I say?  I tell you what I can say...Damn, this is a good book!  The action in Detective Comics does not fail the world of Batman, not by a long shot.  I mean, you got murders happening in Gotham that appear to have the Joker's name on it.  You get the introduction to some new villains and man they are some freaks like Batman has not seen before. The Dollmaker is going to be a fixture in the DC universe for days to come.  This title is definitely a 5 out of 5 star book at the moment.
