Saturday Showcase: the High Evolutionary

Greetings Nerds and Nerdettes,

I apologize for my absences as of late, I was a little detained with some medical emergencies, but I am feeling much better now.  As I promised during my last showcase, I wanted to bring you a character from another GALAXY.  Well, that character is the High Evolutionary and he comes to us from the guardians 3 trailer.  Granted, they changed his look in the MCU but we will focus on the version I feel in love with as a young comic nerd spending his allowance on his paper crack fix as my friend Jonathan would say.

Herbert Edgar Wyndham was born in Manchester, England. While a student at Oxford in the 1930s, he took an interest in the work of genetic biologist Nathaniel Essex, and began experimenting with genetic manipulation, building a machine (he would later call it the genetic accelerator) with which he attempted to "evolve" the rats in his mother's London basement. While attending a genetics conference in Geneva, Wyndham was approached by a mysterious man (Inhuman geneticist Phaeder) who handed to him some papers containing blueprints for cracking the genetic code. With this information to bolster his experiments, Wyndham successfully developed a serum he dubbed "Isotope A".

Wyndham eventually saw the world as a far too confining place, so he converted his scientific research citadel into a spaceship, exploring the stars. He later settled on a planet and stayed on one of the planet's moons and began work on a detailed replica of Earth to be located on the opposite side of the Sun. It is then that some of his creations revolted and fatally wounded him.  Before dying, he was forced to experiment on himself which turned him into a god-like being for a time.

Herbert aka he High Evolutionary eventually returned to human form and finished his creation, Counter-Earth. Although Counter-Earth was supposed to be a temporary structure that would be evolved into a paradise, the Man-Beast corrupted the process, and Counter-Earth became an imperfect world.

During the "Evolutionary War" storyline, the High Evolutionary had become increasingly unstable and maniacal. His attempt to end his life was prevented by his suit. He returned to Earth, hoping to find something strong enough to overcome his armor. He goaded the Hulk into attacking him, and Hulk succeeded in smashing his armor; the malfunctioning armor then devolved the High Evolutionary into a mass of one-celled organisms.

The High Evolutionary later came into conflict with a number of superheroes, notably the reserve Avengers and Adam Warlock, when he tried to forcibly mutate (or "evolve") the entire population of the Earth with his "Evolution Bomb". The Avengers stopped him, though the High Evolutionary and Hercules were exposed to the High Evolutionary's Genesis Chamber and became "more than a god", evolving out of existence.

These eventually return to  "normal" and now the High Evolutionary has been seen helping those he used to  battle.  For example, in the mid 2000s, he was trying to discover why so many mutants were dying and losing their powers & abilities.

Saturday Showcase: the In-Betweener

I was watching Guardians Vol. 2 the other day and it caused me to do some thinking about classic stories from the cosmos known as the Marvel Universe.  That is when I got the idea to do a Saturday Showcase on the In-Betweener.  Just who is the In-Betweener?  Well, he is Chaos, he is Order, he is right, he is wrong, he is madness, he is sanity, he is always in-between.

The In-Betweener was created in 1975 by Jim Starlin.  His first appearance was in Warlock #9 (Oct. 1975).  He has fought avengers, defenders, guardians, as well as the likes of Thanos and Galactus.  He is a powerful cosmic being, but his "ego" usually is his downfall.

He has had partnerships with villains such as Lord Chaos, Master Order, and even Thanos.  His powers besides immortality are the ability to warp perception as well as manipulate/alter reality.

Like I said earlier, he once saw Thanos as an ally, but that ended when Thanos wanted the 6th infinity stone, the Soul Gem, which the In-Betweener possessed. Which led to a battle in which Thanos was the victor.

I believe that Marvel Studios already dropped the ball to introduce him since he was the holder of the Soul Gem, but it would be nice if he is at least mentioned in the Infinity War films.  Besides a Heroclix figure, you really don't see much of the In-Betweener except in the comics and I feel that is an injustice on this classic cosmic character.  I mean, he fought Galactus for Pete's sake!

Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1

It has been a while since I have done a post solely for my blog Derf's Domain.  I have mostly just used this site to help promote interviews that I have done for the wonderful site Somewhatnerdy.  Well, it is a new year and I made a promise to my friends and fans to do more writing on the blog that started it all.  So, for my first exclusive post, I chose to review a comic I just had the pleasure of reading.

The comic I have chosen to review is the Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1. First of all, I know that this comic came out weeks ago, so most of you die hard fans are already familiar with what happened with this issue, but I wanted to share with you anyway.  The reason...I feel this was a well written one-shot that deserves praise.  I mean, you should already know that this is a classic since it was drawn by Frank Cho and written by the one and only Bendis.

The story starts off with Captain Marvel sending a message back to Earth about her new role as a member of the Guardians, when out of nowhere an emergency call comes through by Quill.  It turns out that a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier has appeared in deep space and they think it may be a Skrull trap.  So, of course they approach with caution.  That is when something odd happens.  The helicarrier hatch opens and out comes Nick Fury.

Once they let him board, they realize it really does appear to be the real deal. The Guardians think that it could still be a trap, but they let Captain Marvel take lead on this one, since Nick seems to be familiar with Carol.  Nick is cautious as well, especially when he sees Groot and Rocket.  The interaction between Rocket and Fury when they first met was hilarious.  (Look below to see what I mean)

Getting back to the story, it turns out that Nick and S.H.I.E.L.D are after the Skrulls.  The odd thing is, Nick and his agents as well as the skrulls seem lost in time.  Before more could be said, the skrulls attack.  During this battle, we notice that there is something odd about Fury and his team. In fact, first guesses point to skrulls, but then it is discovered that the S.H.I.E.L.D. team is nothing but LMDs or Life Model Decoys.  Each time a team member dies, another one is made.

Well, let's fast forward to the end of the battle.  The skrulls are defeated and flee. The LMDs go after the Skrulls and the endless cycle begins all over again.  This was truly a comic masterpiece.  The writing and research to tie in the two areas of time was absolute brilliance.

I gladly give this issue a perfect rating of 10 out of 10.  Nothing could have been done to make this issue better.  Well played Bendis, well played.

Until next time, get your READ on!

Why is Angela in Marvel?

That's right Nerds and Nerdettes, Angela from Image's Spawn comics is now a resident of the Marvel Universe.  Most of you comic readers already know this but I also know some people who didn't so I decided to share the news.  So you may have not heard it hear first, but just remember that Derf's Domain did not let you down, LoL.

Just what role will the lovely but deadly Angela have at Marvel U?  Well, what is known is that she will appear in the Age of Ultron series towards the end.  After Age of Ultron is complete, she will join the ensemble of the Guardians of the Galaxy.  Will she be good or evil?  Only time will tell.

How did Marvel get so lucky to land such a great character from a rival company?  It's simple, one of Angela's creators works for Marvel now.  For those of you who didn't know Neil Gaiman created Angela with Todd McFarlane but he had the rights to the character.  Now that Neil works on the Guardians series, he is bringing Angela to the Marvel Universe for all of his fans to enjoy.  I am one of the thankful ones because she was always a great character to read about.  You knew when she was in a comic, someone's ass was going to get kicked!

The image below is a reveal of her new look as drawn by Joe Quesada.
