Wonder Woman - Official Trailer

Comic Picks for 11/09/16

I had to cut down my reading list due to finances as well as loss of interest to be honest.  Some titles that I was reading seemed to be running in circles lately. SO, I really haven't been as passionate for comics as I have been in the past. Thanks to you, the readers, and the demand for my picks of the week, I have found that passion again. Don't get me wrong, I haven't stop reading cold turkey, I just narrow down my personal list.  However, for my picks, I will pick all titles that I feel are read-worthy.  Let's begin shall we?

DC Comics:
(Men of Steel story-line begins)
(Speed of Darkness begins)

IDW:

Marvel:
(the Hulk returns back from the dead...or does he?)

Vertigo:

Well, that is all for this week.  I hope you find something that you will enjoy.
Until next time, get your READ on!

What2Watch: the Exorcist

I'm starting a new section on my blog known as What2Watch or W2W.  This is when I will take the time to tell you, my fans what i think you should watch on your TV or even in the theatre or computer.  Since it is October, it is only fitting that I start with something a little scary.

As a child, and even still today, the movie that gives me the chills is the Exorcist. I saw the Exorcist when I was young and as I went to bed my brother was hiding under my bed and gave me a scare.  After years of nightmares and therapy I became a fan of this genre of horror.  So when I heard they were making a TV series based on the film I was very excited.

The series follows the paths of two priests.  One is a young up and comer in the mean streets of Chicago while the other is a former exorcist who is forced into an early retirement due to an exorcism that didn't end as all had hoped.  It is through God's guidance that there paths cross.

You see, the young priest, Father Tomas is need of assistance to help some patrons from his parish who is having a little "trouble".  As more is discovered about the family, we realize the girl in question, Kat,  wasn't the possessed one at all...it is her sister, Casey.  It is obvious they are facing a powerful demon.  A demon who is all familiar with the sins and failures of Father Tomas and the retired Exorcist Father Marcus.

As they battle the demon, things get complicated.  Father Tomas is too weak in the sins of the flesh to be successful as an exorcist and Father Marcus is stopped before he can finish due to Kat's interference.  That wasn't the biggest bombshell on the latest episode titled, "Grievous" dropped.  I must warn you to stop reading now if you haven't seen this episode. For those still with me, it turns out that Angela Rance has a big secret.  It turns out that Angela isn't her real name.  Her real name is Regan MacNeil.  Yes, that's right,  Geena Davis is the adult Regan to Linda Blairs child Regan.  What a bomb!

This show is definitely worth watching, DVRing, On Demanding, and owning when the Blue-rays hit the shelves.

I give the Exorcist 9 out of 10 Stars.  I only give it a 9 because some episodes were a little slow but it is definitely getting better and will always be worth watching.

Let's Talk Comics on TV: Preacher

AMC has continued to take comics and successfully transition them to TV.  Now that season 1 of Preacher is over, I am curious to hear from you the fans on your thoughts of the matter.

I for one was not a die hard fan of the show until episode 5 when we found out more about Genesis and exactly what it can do.   When Jesse condemned Eugene to Hell and that is exactly what happened, the hairs on my arms stood straight up. That is how well, the show captured that moment.  From episode 5 until the finale I was entranced.  In fact I had a DVR marathon yesterday just to see it before writing this post.

Now, I know there are naysayers and doubters of the show because it isn't paced exactly like the comics, but that is fine with me.  I mean look, you still have some people bitch about how the Walking Dead isn't like the books.  Who cares as long as it is entertaining?  I wasn't sold on Preacher right away but I am a big fan now and I cannot wait to see what will take place in Season 2.  I will say that the casting of Jesse and Cassidy is just plain brilliant and gives the show the life it needs to last.

I what to know, what are your thoughts on the matter.  Please feel free to post in the comments section and I will try to answer you in a timely matter.  Until next time, get your READ on and in this case, get you TV on. XD

Comic Spotlight: The Predator and the Prey

I have been recovering from surgery for the past week and in my time I have been reading some of my old issues just to pass the time.  Anyway, and idea was created to start sharing some of my favorite classic stories.  I know I have done something similar in the past but I wanted to make improvements to my posts.  So, for this MARVELous Monday, I thought I would start with the classic The Predator and the Prey story line that took place in the issues of the Spectacular Spider-Man #215 and #216.

The story features a beaten Scorpion wanting to figure out what's next in his life.  He is ready to give up everything.  He is tired of getting stopped by your neighborhood wall crawler. Just when all hope is lost, he bumps into a recluse billionaire by the name of Phillip Cussler, who wants to help the Scorpion.  In helping the Scorpion, he wants to get back at his family who is trying to get their inheritance according to him.  Anyway, Scorpion and Cussler come up with a plan to stop Spider-man.  Unfortunately for them the plan doesn't work. As a beaten, mentally and physically, Spider-Man leaves the sewer, his senses go off and he strikes without thinking.  Who does he strike?  Well, Mr. Cussler of course.  Problem is, Jameson was there with a photographer to catch it all.  That ends part 1.

In part 2, we find Peter trying to cope with what happened, not only his recent run in with JJJ, but with his Aunt May's failing health.  He decided to take some time to visit May while on his way he spots Mac aka Scorpion walking near the hospital as well.  It appears that Cussler is at the same hospital as May.  So, we follow into the sewer's and there Spider-Man is waiting and pounces on Mac without hesitation.  He is pleading for his life but Spidey keeps dishing out the punishment.  Tired, Spidey leaves and trusts that what Mac has told him is true.  We then find Peter in Aunt May's room when a webbed warrior swings by her room.  Peter runs to the top and guess what, he runs into his clone Ben O'Riley.  Duh, duh, dunnnn. XD

One thing I love about this story line is the artwork.  Sal Buscema is a talent like no other.  Whenever I think about how the Scorpion should look, I always go to the cover of Spectacular #215.  That is how I will always think the Scorpion should look like.

New Iron Man?

Well, we all know how fans reacted to Cap being an agent of Hydra (later explained in issue #2, after the panic), so how do you think that Tony being replaced with a teenage girl will go over?

I guess let the arguing begin, lol.  My only wish is they give her her own personality and not imitating Iron Man like Rhodes did in the 80's.  Oh and a better name than Rescue.

Cosplay Spotlight: Vivid Vivka

You really need to head over to SomeWhatNerdy to see my latest interview.

The always beautiful Vivid Vivka is the focus.

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

SWN: First of all let me tell you that I have been a fan of yours for a long time. But for those who may not know, who are you and where are you from?
VV: Daw, you sweetie. <3 strong="">
I'm Vivid Vivka. I'm a small girl with colorful hair and a tiny dog, and I'm just trying to do big things. I was born and raised in Detroit, and now I am based near Los Angeles.
SWN: How did you discover cosplay?
VV: I've always preferred "dressing up" over "real clothes" since ever. I would take sheets and use them as cape as a child, wear hot-glued costumes to Renn Faires, get elaborate on Halloweens... then I started building weird themed costumes and outfits to wear on the weekends, to clubs. Then I started building specific outfits, based on characters I saw and loved via anime, cartoons, comics. Then I learned, ZE GODZ, tons of people do this. Together. At a place called "con".
One con and I was hooked.

Captain America...Agent of HYDRA?

Well, well, well, Marvel has once again launched themselves in controversial waters.  The latest controversy comes to us from this week's release of Captain America: Steve Rogers #1.  What could the controversy be besides the fact that Steve is young again and wants to be called Cap?  Well, it turns out he is working with HYDRA...or is he?

I know there are many fans going that's it!  I quit!  Just like when Sam Wilson became Cap or when Jane Foster became the new Thor.  People, these are comics.  A comic tells a story of imagination and brings that imagination to life with art.  As we all know, controversy increase hype, which then increases sales.  So, with that said, I do not mind or even question the change.  The comic would not be called Captain America if Steve is a faithful member of HYDRA.  This is all part of a story folks.  Hell, it may turn out that the real Steve died or is being held captive and this is an impostor.  Who knows, the possibilities are endless.  So, before you throw away your collection or stop getting comics, just remember to give it time and all will work itself out.  I should know, I was pissed when Marvel killed the Punisher, but he is back and better than ever.  So, chillax and enjoy the show.

Comics You Should Be Reading: Street Fighter vs G.I. Joe #1

If you are anything like me, then you grew up watching G.I. Joe cartoons and losing quarters to the Street Fighter game at the arcade.  That is why I was beyond happy when I found out that IDW was coming out with a Street Fighter vs G.I. Joe comic.
Issue #1 begins with the introduction of a tournament known as the World Warrior Tournament.  Who thought of such a wonderful tournament?  Why Major Bison and Destro of course.  Why are these great fighters gathered together?  Well, the future will answer that question but we are given some clues from this amazing first issue.
There are classic fights, the first we witness is a classic battle between Crimson Viper and Snake-Eyes.  Then, we see matches that include baroness and Roadblock.  Who exactly wins these bouts?  Well, I could spoil it for you but I choose not to.  All I can say is that this comic has all the key players that one needs to be satisfied.

I strongly give issue one a rating of 10 out of 10 stars.   In fact, I was so impressed with the book, that I contacted the writer, Aubrey Sitterson for an interview for that website you know and love, Somewhatnerdy.  He said yes, so be on the look out.  Until next time, get your READ on and Yo Joe!
